Comedian and actor Russell Brand is to appear on BBC One's Question Time, it has been announced.

The 38-year-old will sit on the panel of the political debate show alongside London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey, Labour MP Tessa Jowell and author Melanie Phillips will also appear to face questions from the audience.

David Dimbleby will chair the programme from London's City Hall, which will be broadcast on 20 June at 22:35 BST.

Last year, Question Time asked viewers via its Twitter feed to suggest guests for the series.

Brand was a name that had been mentioned by several followers.

It is not the first time the comic has forayed into politics - last April he appeared at a Home Affairs Select Committee on drugs policy.

Brand follows in the footsteps of other celebrities to appear on the show including Charlotte Church, Hugh Grant, Fern Britton and Will Young.
