The co-production of Benvenuto Cellini with Amsterdam's De Nederlandse Opera will run from June next year
Monty Python member turned Hollywood film-maker Terry Gilliam is to return as a director for the English National Opera, it has been announced.
The director of Time Bandits and Brazil will helm a production of the opera Benvenuto Cellini, by French romantic composer Hector Berlioz.
The 72-year-old said he had "beginner's luck" in 2011 with his first ENO production, The Damnation of Faust.
Gilliam's return was announced as part of the ENO's new 2013-14 season.
The director, whose other films include Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, said Berlioz was "wonderfully ahead of his time".
"He had too many ideas, he was spectacular, he was shameless, the music is so extreme - and I kind of identify with him," he added in a promotional video.
The "technically challenging and rarely performed opera", which is based loosely on the life of the Florentine sculptor of the title, will be conducted by Edward Gardner.
Gilliam joins a programme that includes the UK premieres of 10 productions and four revivals of recent hits, including Philip Glass's Satyagraha and the late Anthony Minghella's Madam Butterfly.
ENO artistic director John Berry said the "amazing line-up of directors... feels like a melting pot of talent from the last four or five years."
The 2013-14 seasons starts in September with a new production of Beethoven's Fidelio masterminded by the Spanish director Calixto Bieito.
