Rauhofer reworked tracks by Rihanna, Madonna and others
Peter Rauhofer, the DJ responsible for the Grammy-winning disco remix of Cher's track Believe, has died aged 48.
Austrian-born Rauhofer, who went by the name Club 69, suffered a brain tumour and died in New York on Tuesday.
In a message on Rauhofer's Facebook page, his manager Angelo Russo said the music industry had "lost one of its true heroes".
"Through his music, Peter will live forever. The brightest stars always burn out too soon," he added.
Rauhofer, who started the tribal house label Star 69, had lived in New York since the early 1990s.
In 2000, under the name Club 69, he won a Grammy for remixer of the year for his reworking of Cher's number one song Believe, first released in 1998.
In a statement, Recording Academy president Neil Portnow paid tribute to Rauhofer as "an innovative and gifted" artist.
"His impact on EDM [electronic dance music] will continue to inspire music lovers and keep them dancing."
Rauhofer's other work included collaborations with Britney Spears, Rihanna, Janet Jackson and Christina Aguilera.
He also produced remixes of a number of Madonna's songs, including Nothing Really Matters and Get Together.
Grammy winning producer DJ Sharam paid tribute on Twitter, saying he was "shocked and saddened" by his death.
Rauhofer, he said, was "a true pioneer responsible for paving the way for the current EDM explosion".
"RIP Peter Rauhofer," said Nic Fanciulli, owner of London label Saved Records. "Thank you for some amazing records."
The DJ is survived by his mother Helga, who lives in Vienna.
